Usually, a piece of software that initiates your hardware and\u2026<\/section>\n<section class=\"e-content\" data-field=\"body\">\n<section class=\"section section--body section--first\">\n<div class=\"section-divider\">\n<hr class=\"section-divider\" \/>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section-content\">\n<div class=\"section-inner sectionLayout--insetColumn\">\n<h3 id=\"fbe7\" class=\"graf graf--h3 graf--leading graf--title\">Designing a \u2018Bootstrap\u2019<\/h3>\n<p id=\"ea59\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--h3\">Until recently bootstrapping was something I associated with technology. Usually, a piece of software that initiates your hardware and software like your operating system when firing up your laptop in the morning. The \u2018coffee\u2019 of the software world if you will.<\/p>\n<p id=\"4ff1\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Bootstrapping is also a business approach. An endeavour without extensive investment or financial risk to yourself (unlike a start-up, for example).<\/p>\n<p id=\"c382\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">I learnt the ins-and-outs of Bootstrapping last year as part of <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/thebootstrappersworkshop.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/thebootstrappersworkshop.com\/\">Seth Godin\u2019s Bootstrapper\u2019s workshop<\/a>. I\u2019d encourage you to check it out if never done a Seth Godin Workshops before. It\u2019s usually fast-paced with tons of growth opportunities within a community of like-minded individuals. One a piece of advice, be ready to put in the time and effort if you\u2019re looking to maximise your return on investment.<\/p>\n<p id=\"4615\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">During the Bootstrapper\u2019s workshop, my brain connected the design methods I use in my practice with the topics they were covering.<\/p>\n<p id=\"21d5\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">Bootstrapping a business requires three things,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"6014\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">A group of people that you perhaps already have access to, who have a problem that you can solve for them. A \u2018niche audience\u2019 that you aim to serve generously.<\/p>\n<p id=\"8284\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">You want to gain momentum quickly, asses potential copy-cats (and competitors) to continuously evolve and grow this \u2018Asset\u2019.<\/p>\n<p id=\"5868\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">A \u2018tool\u2019 for thought<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"a16a\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">By developing an authentic and compelling narrative, you give your audience a reason to trust you. The right \u2018story\u2019 will spread like wildfire.<\/p>\n<p id=\"5e4f\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">This drove me to articulate this for my own designs into a simple design tool. A group that you can solve a specific problem for. Consider your network, your social communities, interest groups and identify people who will listen to you. Who are they?<\/p>\n<p id=\"9faf\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">(2)<\/strong> Empathise with them, what are the challenges they are facing?<\/p>\n<p id=\"9e7c\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">(3)<\/strong> Why will they (or do they) trust you?<\/p>\n<p id=\"d824\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">(4)<\/strong> You want to serve them uniquely, why do you have a head start?<\/p>\n<p id=\"f810\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">(5) <\/strong>What value do you want to create for your audience? Be careful; this is a trick: This is not your solution, instead define the impact you want to create. For example, \u201cI can save them time\u201d\u200a\u2014\u200athat would be an impact as a result of your product or service. Tip: I do this by asking, \u201cHow might I\u00a0\u2026 \u201c<\/p>\n<p id=\"a27f\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">Part 2\u200a\u2014\u200aBuilding an <\/em><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\"><em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">\u2018asset.\u2019<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"fa61\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">(6)<\/strong> Define your solution; how will you create this value? For some folks, this is obvious, but if you are exploring ideas, find ways you can fill the gap between <strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">(5)<\/strong> and <strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">(2)<\/strong>. Prioritise your thoughts, or combine some of them to shape your offering.<\/p>\n<p id=\"6d29\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">(7)<\/strong> What Kind of Bootstrapping architecture will you be using? There are a few different models you can turn to;<\/p>\n<ul class=\"postList\">\n<li id=\"8b25\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--p\">Jobbers\u200a\u2014\u200aYou are bringing the right product to the right people in a unique way.<\/li>\n<li id=\"ceb2\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">Organisers\u200a\u2014\u200aYour ability to deliver and connect the right people creates value.<\/li>\n<li id=\"df51\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">Coordinators\u200a\u2014\u200aYou pride yourself on the trust you have earned and can connect your customers with the right services and labour they need.<\/li>\n<li id=\"4ea2\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">Asset owners\u200a\u2014\u200aYou own something that someone wants to use for a short period.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"b6b0\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--li\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">(8)<\/strong> How will you do this? What services, skills and resources do you need to set this up?<\/p>\n<p id=\"ec0e\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">(9)<\/strong> How will you be making a profit? Have you considered the business plan? How secure is your business and are you able to pivot easily?<\/p>\n<p id=\"6dae\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">(10)<\/strong> You don\u2019t want to create something that someone will copy in a few weeks. What is the potential of this becoming an asset for you over time?<\/p>\n<p id=\"e1b4\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">Part 3\u200a\u2014\u200aWhat <\/em><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\"><em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">\u2018story\u2019 <\/em><\/strong><em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">are you telling your audience?<\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"928d\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">(11) <\/strong>There is an interesting interplay between increasing the status of your customers and decreasing their tension. How will you use tension and status for enrolment?<\/p>\n<p id=\"4150\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">(12) <\/strong>You want them to \u2018hear\u2019 you. How and where will you find your customers?<\/p>\n<p id=\"9479\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">(13)<\/strong> How does your offering fit into their narrative?
